The
Cleveland Browns
plan to sign tight end
Darren Fells
to a three-year, $12 million contract,
according to Dan Graziano of ESPN
.
This will mark the second addition to the Browns’ offense on Wednesday, as they also agreed to terms with former San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde.
Fells spent the 2017 campaign with the Detroit Lions, playing in all 16 games and catching 17 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns.
The 31-year-old did not even play college football. Instead, he played college basketball at UC Irvine and then proceeded to play professional basketball in seven different countries before deciding to give football a shot.
Fells landed with the Seattle Seahawks in March 2013, but was released and did not play in the NFL at all that season. He did sign with the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad that fall and then inked a reserve/future contract with the club in January 2014.
Fells ended up playing in 10 games for the Cardinals the following season, logging five catches for 71 yards. His role with the team expanded in 2015, as he hauled in 21 receptions for 311 yards and three touchdowns.

Fells, who is the younger brother of former NFL tight end Daniel Fells, spent the first three years of his NFL career in Arizona before signing with the Lions as a free agent last March.
The Browns are coming off a miserable 2017 campaign in which they went 0-16. They have gone just 4-44 since 2015 and have not made the playoffs since the 2002-03 season, marking the longest active drought in the NFL.
